Edgewater is an established residential area, with light industry in the south-west. Edgewater is bounded by Eddystone Avenue, Joondalup Drive, Lakeside Drive and the suburb of Joondalup in the north, Lake Joondalup in the east, Ocean Reef Road in the south and the Mitchell Freeway in the west. Edgewater is named for its location, on the western shores of Lake Joondalup.
Development of the area dates primarily from the early 1970s. Rapid growth took place during the 1970s and 1980s. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then declined slightly between 2001 and 2006, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Major features of the area include Yellagonga Regional Park, Lake Joondalup, Emerald Park, Picnic Cove Park and two schools.
